Is Berlin becoming more Biodeutsch?

I suppose discrimination in housing is a thing. Did people notice Berlin becoming less diverse and more Weißdeutsch? I suppose discrimination in housing is a thing. Did people notice Berlin becoming less diverse and more Weißdeutsch?

I've been in Berlin for about eight years now and I think the bigger shift is economic, not ethnic. The city is getting more expensive and that pushes out anyone who can't afford rising rents, regardless of background. I rent in Wedding and my building is still a mix of Turkish, Arabic, German, and Polish families, but I see fewer new people moving in because the cheap apartments are disappearing. The discrimination angle is real but I notice it more in who gets invited to house viewings than in who actually lives here.

fwiw i think the rental market is so insane rn that landlords just go with whoever has the best schufa and payslips regardless of name. i've seen turkish germans with perfect credit get apartments in charlottenburg no problem while my german friend with a freelance income got ghosted for months. the real discrimination in berlin is against people without a permanent contract tbh

imo the real shift is in who's visible in public spaces. like go to any park in Pberg on a sunny day and it's mostly white families with kids now, compared to five years ago when you'd see way more mixed groups hanging out. the housing thing is real but it's also cultural - the city's vibe is changing because the people who can afford to stay are a specific demographic. i've had turkish friends tell me they feel less welcome in their own hoods lately, which says a lot.

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
