Is it safe to visit Berlin on New Years Eve?

I read in the news that there will be more police on duty in Berlin this year than ever before..out of fear of attacks and riots.

Is this just scaremongering by the media?

imo the media is full of it, it's more of a massive street party than anything dangerous. the real risk is stepping on broken glass or getting hit by a stray firework from some drunk person, not attacks. if you want to enjoy it without the craziness, grab some champagne and head to a rooftop or a friend's balcony in Prenzlauer Berg, way better view of the fireworks without the chaos

The police presence is definitely noticeable, but it's more about crowd management than danger. They close off parts of the city center early, so plan your route if you're heading to a party. I'd suggest finding a smaller neighborhood celebration instead of the big show at Brandenburger Tor, the U-Bahn gets absolutely packed and the fireworks smoke can be rough.

ngl the news makes it sound way worse than it actually is. berlin on nye is a full on warzone of fireworks and broken glass but not of violence. the police presence is mostly around alexanderplatz and brandenburger tor, if you're in kreuzberg or neukölln it's just people setting off böller in the streets until 4am. just watch your step and don't walk through the big crowds if you don't have to
