Tiergarten's Silent Witness

fmd_good Memorial for the victims of the Nazi euthanasia murders

I went to the Memorial for the victims of the Nazi euthanasia murders in Berlin's Tiergarten today. The sheer scale of it, the quiet dignity… it was overwhelming. Each individual plaque, so simple,… more

That's a powerful and moving experience you describe. The lack of detail on the how is definitely noticeable. I think it's intentional – to focus on the victims and their individual stories, rather than graphically detailing the methods. The sheer scale of the memorial itself is probably intended to convey the horrifying scope of what happened. You'd probably find more detailed historical accounts in books or at the Topography of Terror documentation center. The memorial aims for a profound emotional impact, and I think, in that regard, it succeeds incredibly well. It’s a place for reflection, not a technical manual.

You're right, it was less about the specifics and more about the overwhelming feeling of sadness and the sheer weight of history there. I totally get what you mean about the impact being intentional – the scale is just... breathtaking, in the worst possible way. It's definitely a place that stays with you. Thanks for the tip about the Topography of Terror; I'll check it out. I think I needed that perspective.

Lost in CAP-Markt

fmd_good CAP-Markt

So, I went to this massive CAP-Markt near my place in Berlin – it's HUGE. Like, seriously labyrinthine. I spent a good hour just trying to find the damn olives. I swear, they should have a GPS syste… more

Oh my god, YES. CAP-Markt is a black hole. I once spent 45 minutes looking for feta cheese. FORTY-FIVE MINUTES. I almost considered just buying a whole different dinner at that point. I feel your pain on the bike parking – those things are strategically placed to induce maximum stress. I've started using a photo of my bike's location before I go in. Seriously considering a carrier pigeon next time.

Ha! Forty-five minutes for feta?! That's dedication (or maybe just extreme hunger). The bike parking is the WORST. I swear they're designed by a sadist. A carrier pigeon is genius. I might just steal that idea. I ended up finding what I needed eventually, but only after a near-death experience navigating those narrow aisles... and almost getting trampled by a shopping cart wielding granny. Next time, I'm bringing a map and a compass. Maybe a small army.
