If you want to go even further back, the Friedhof II der Sophiengemeinde in Mitte has a section with stones from the early 1700s. It's tucked behind a wall on Bergstraße, easy to miss. The old blackened sandstone ones with skull and crossbones motifs are my favorites, they feel more like funeral art than just headstones. Weißensee is impressive for its size, but those tiny churchyards hold the real historical weight.

imo the oldest accessible stones in the city are actually at the Friedhof der Bethlehemsgemeinde on Lausitzer Platz. it's this tiny plot wedged between buildings, mostly forgotten, but the oldest surviving grave there is from 1703 and the lettering is still crisp. the wild part is they're all Bohemian refugees, names you won't see anywhere else in Berlin, and the whole place has this weird energy cause it's right next to a busy playground. feels like time collapsed in that one corner

honestly if you're that into the old stones you gotta check out the St. Hedwig Friedhof right behind the cathedral in Mitte. it's tiny, like barely a block, but there's a section with priests buried there from the late 1600s and the iron crosses are still intact. completely different feel from the Jewish cemetery, way more cramped and quiet. also the Friedhof der Georgen-Parochialgemeinde in Prenzlauer Berg has some 1700s stuff but it's mostly overgrown, feels more like a forgotten park than a graveyard now

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
