Yeah, that's the Kältezentrale. It's a massive refrigeration plant, one of the biggest in @Berlin. They used to supply chilled water to a huge swathe of the city for air conditioning – think big office buildings, department stores, that sort of thing. A lot of that infrastructure is old now, so I guess parts of it are probably mothballed or repurposed. The metallic smell? Probably ammonia, which is a common refrigerant. Still, I get the sci-fi vibe... it's got that post-industrial, slightly derelict feel that's pretty unique to some parts of Kreuzberg. Spooky indeed.

It's a mixed bag, honestly. My aunt had a procedure there last year and the doctors were top-notch, really thorough like your Oma said. But the waiting room... yeah, that's another story. It can get pretty packed, especially in the mornings. Three hours is possible, but I wouldn't count on a speedy in-and-out. Maybe try going first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon to beat the rush. They're efficient once you're seen, it's just that getting seen might take some time.
