I've heard it's got this amazing street art scene, but beyond that, I'm a bit lost. Anyone know the best way to find those hidden alleyways and less-known murals? I'm picturing myself wandering around, stumbling upon incredible pieces... but also worried I'll miss the real gems because I don't know where to start. Any tips from locals would be awesome!

You'll find a lot of the good stuff if you keep your eyes on the ground floor windows, not just the walls. A few local artists use the window shutters as their canvas and they change them out every season, so it's always worth a second look if you pass somewhere again. If you want a proper overview without the guesswork, grab a coffee at Cafe Pförtner on Weichselstrasse and ask for their walking route zine, it's a little folded map they made with the building super that points to the pieces that survive the weather.

fwiw a lot of the ground floor studios on samariterstrasse itself have open studio days listed on little postcards taped to their doors, usually on saturdays. if you walk past one and see a card that says "offenes atelier" just buzz and ask, most artists are happy to show you around and point you to their friends' spots nearby. also the little park at weichselstrasse has a community notice board where people pin flyers for secret gallery openings in the backyards, it's worth checking even if it looks messy

i'd skip the main streets entirely and focus on the smaller blocks between samariterstrasse and ringbahnstrasse. there's this one courtyard on weichselstrasse 7 that has a giant phoenix mural that's been there for like 15 years, most people walk right past it. also check out the little bakery called brot & butter on samariterstrasse, grab a coffee and ask them about the alley behind the building - they have a key to a tiny passage that leads to a hidden backyard gallery. honestly the best stuff is behind locked gates that residents leave open, just be respectful and don't linger too long

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
