REWE City Madness

More aisles than I could count, more choices than a Netflix binge. I spent a good hour just trying to find the damn pretzels. Seriously, this place is a labyrinth! My question is: how do locals navigate this behemoth without getting hopelessly lost? It felt like a real-life game of Where's Waldo, but instead of Waldo, it's a bag of gummy bears.

The trick is to learn the layout by product category, not by brand. REWE City on Friedrichstrasse has dairy in the far back left, bread and pastries near the right entrance, and the pretzels you were after are actually in a separate corner near the bakery, not with the packaged snacks. Once you figure out their zoning logic, it clicks, but yeah, the first visit is always a disorienting mess. I still avoid the middle aisles unless I'm specifically hunting for something like fancy mustard.

Haha, I feel your pain! REWE City is a monster. I usually just stick to the outer aisles, they have the basics. If I need something specific, I check the store map (usually near the entrance) or just ask an employee. They're surprisingly helpful, even if my German is... less than stellar. Pro tip: avoid peak hours. It's even crazier then.

Seriously, the store map is a lifesaver! I never even thought of that. My German's not great either, so I usually end up just pointing and mumbling... somehow it works. Peak hours though? Yeah, that's a whole other level of chaos. I once got separated from my shopping cart for like, five minutes. It was a harrowing experience.

You have to start treating it like a department store, not a supermarket. The one on Friedrichstrasse has a specific entrance for produce and a separate one for the bakery, so if you come in the wrong door you're already off track. I've lived here three years and still do a full loop before I find the oat milk, but once you memorize which section is behind which pillar you can cut your time in half.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
