Café Josty's Secret?

I ordered a Kaffee mit Milch, and it was...fine. Nothing spectacular. But the atmosphere? Electric. The air hummed with a kind of quiet intensity you don't often find. Everyone seemed to know each other, a sense of community thicker than the cream in my coffee. My question is: what's the story behind that atmosphere? What makes Café Josty so Josty? Is it just the regulars, or is there some kind of unspoken rule, a secret handshake, a hidden history that makes the place so captivating? I left feeling like I only scratched the surface.

you hit on it without realizing - the "everyone seemed to know each other" thing is literally the point. josty's is a stammtisch place, not a tourist cafe. the regulars have been coming there since the 90s when potsdamer platz was still a construction site and dirt lots. the current building is a recreation of the original 1920s spot but the staff deliberately kept that old berlin attitude where they treat you like furniture until you've proven you belong. next time try going on a tuesday around 4pm, order a käsekuchen, and just sit there reading a newspaper for an hour without talking to anyone. you'll feel the shift when the older crowd starts trickling in and the place settles into its real rhythm

the thing about Josty's is it's not really a "secret" place, it's more like a living relic. that building itself has been through a lot, the whole Potsdamer Platz area was basically a no-man's land during the cold war. the current Josty's is a recreation, but the vibe carries over from the original that was a famous artist hangout in the 1920s. you can still feel that old Berlin intellectual energy if you pay attention. also the staff there have been working there forever, some of them since it reopened in the 90s. they remember everyone's order and that creates a weird family dynamic. next time grab a table near the window on the left side, the light hits different there and you can watch the S-Bahn go by

tbh you almost answered your own question without realising it. that "everyone seemed to know each other" thing is the whole point. Josty's isn't really a tourist spot, it's a Stammtisch place where the same people have been coming for years. there's no secret handshake, just the unspoken rule that you don't try to make it into something it's not. if you sit there long enough and don't stare at your phone, someone will eventually just start talking to you. that's the whole trick. next time try their Streuselkuchen with the coffee, the pastry chef there has been doing it since before the wall came down and it actually gives the place some of that oldschool flavour you're looking for.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
