Heard some...whispers about the old building, supposedly some parts date back to before the war. Anyone know any good (or bad!) stories about the place? Seriously curious about the history, the vibe, anything really. It's not exactly a tourist destination, but it feels like it could be. My doctor just said "It's a hospital," which, yeah, I kinda gathered. But I need more. More stories!

the old tuberculosis ward is still standing if you look past the newer glass extension. my grandpa was treated there in the 50s, said the walls were so thick you couldnt hear the air raid sirens back in the day. there's a weird courtyard garden behind the chapel that's completely overgrown, feels like stepping into a different century. the doctors are fine but the building itself has this heavy quiet that sticks with you

honestly the building's been through a lot. the original part was a tuberculosis sanatorium in the 1910s, so it's seen way more than just war. there's a small memorial plaque near the main entrance for the forced laborers who worked there during the nazi era, most people walk right past it. if you're up for a walk, the old chapel on the grounds is still there too, it's got these gorgeous stained glass windows that survived the bombing. the hospital itself is fine, doctors are solid, but the history is real if you look for it

you can actually see the old foundation stones if you go around the back near the loading dock, theyre marked with a small plaque in german and russian. the hospital pharmacy used to be in the original basement and theres still a locked door with a faded sign for it that nobody ever opens. its not spooky exactly, just heavy with layers of use. the cafeteria has decent pfannekuchen though, weirdly fluffy for hospital food

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
