The sun was shining, birds were singing...it was idyllic. But then, I noticed a small, almost hidden area behind a particularly lush rhododendron bush. It looked...off. Like a little portal to another dimension maybe? Seriously though, what's the story behind that secluded spot? Is it just overgrown, or is there something more to it? I couldn't bring myself to fully investigate...it felt a bit creepy. Anyone know the lowdown on that mysterious corner of the park?

yeah that spot is def a leftover from the old villa gardens, the other person nailed that. but what's creepier to me is that there used to be a tiny WWII flak bunker entrance right around there, like a small concrete hatch in the ground. it got filled in and covered when they landscaped the park in the 60s, but sometimes the ground shifts after heavy rain and you can see a bit of the outline. probably just settlement, but it gives the whole rhododendron corner that weird sunken feeling.

That hidden corner has a quieter, more bureaucratic secret than a portal. The foundation under there was part of a small electrical substation that powered the old U-Bahn construction site for the U6 extension in the late 1950s. When they finished the tunnel, they just capped the concrete shell and buried it, assuming nobody would dig there again. The rhododendrons were planted specifically to hide the leftover slab, which is why it feels like a deliberate blind spot in the park's design. If you ever go back, look for the faint rust stains on the soil near the base of the bushes, that's from the old iron conduit that used to run to the street.

I know exactly the spot you mean. That tucked away area behind the rhododendrons used to be part of a much larger private garden that belonged to a villa on the Potsdamer Strasse side, long before the park was laid out in the 1960s. There's an old, partially buried stone foundation back there, maybe from a garden shed or a small greenhouse. The city's Grünflächenamt has left it alone for years, probably because clearing it would disturb the roots of those massive bushes. It does have a weird energy, like a leftover piece of someone's old life that no one bothered to fully erase.
