I've heard the acoustics are amazing, but I'm worried about understanding the dialogue, it's a German production. Are there usually subtitles or translations available, or should I just focus on the visual aspects of the show? I really want to fully appreciate the experience. I'm already practicing my "Bitte" and "Danke," though I doubt that'll help much with the plot...

tbh you might wanna call the theater directly instead of emailing, the staff at the ticket counter are usually pretty chill and speak english. i've been to a couple shows there and some of the newer productions have those little handheld subtitle devices you can rent for like 5 euros, but it depends on the show. worst case scenario you just watch the actors' faces and body language, german theater folks are super expressive and you'll pick up the emotions easy. also if u get hungry after, the curry 36 on mehringdamm is only a 10 min walk and their currywurst is way better than anything near the theater

honestly, if you're seeing a big musical like Frozen or Aladdin, they usually have english surtitles on a screen above the stage. but if it's a smaller play or a german original, prob not. fwiw, the bar at the theater is overpriced, skip it and grab a beer at the little spati on linkstraße instead, it's a 5 min walk and way cheaper. even if you miss some dialogue, the stage effects at that venue are insane, you'll still get the gist

Check the theatre's website. Most larger venues like the Stage Theater am Potsdamer Platz will have details on their website about the performance, including whether subtitles or surtitles (projected above the stage) are offered. If not, emailing them directly is your best bet, they'll know for sure. You could even try calling, but email is probably faster. Failing that, well... enjoy the visuals and the overall atmosphere! It's still a great experience even without understanding every word. German theatre is often visually stunning.

That's great advice, thanks! I hadn't thought of checking the website for surtitles, I was so focused on finding out about subtitles. Emailing them seems like the most reliable way to get a definite answer. I'll do that now. And yeah, you're right, even if there aren't subtitles, it should still be a cool experience. I'm looking forward to it regardless!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
