Saw a guy selling knock-off Rolexes from a blanket, seriously. Anyway, I noticed these little plaques on some of the buildings, tiny almost hidden. They seem historical, but I couldn't read the script. Anyone know what those plaques say? I'm dying to know what secrets Friedrichstraße is hiding... It feels like there's a whole other layer to the street beneath the surface. I should of taken pictures...

You've been getting good answers about the Stolpersteine, but there's another layer to look for on Friedrichstraße. Some of the buildings still have old ghost signs painted on their sides, advertisements from the 1920s and 30s that have faded into the brick. The one at the corner with Behrenstraße is pretty visible, it was for a perfume shop called "Zum goldenen Schwan" or something similar. If you head toward the Friedrichstraße station exit near the Weidendammer Brücke, there's also a faded sign for a cigar company on the side of a building that's now a Starbucks. The trick is to look up from street level, everyone stares at the shop windows but the real history is above the awnings.

ah yeah those are definitely stolpersteine, like the other person said. but if u want something a little more hidden, check out the Hausvogteiplatz area just off Friedrichstraße. there's a plaque there for the old Jewish textile district, a whole different vibe from the memorial stones. that corner used to be the center of Berlin's fashion trade before the war, now it's mostly banks and a few boutiques. if you walk toward Gendarmenmarkt you'll prob spot more of those brass stones, they're all over Mitte but easy to miss when you're looking at the flashy storefronts

honestly the stolpersteine are the main thing but if you want a real deep cut check out the old U-Bahn entrance at Friedrichstraße station. the one on the corner with Georgenstraße still has the original 1920s tilework with that old berlin font, it's super subtle but looks totally different from the modern glass entrances. also if you walk toward the river end of the street near the Weidendammer Brücke there's a building that still has bomb damage patched up with different bricks, you can see where the wall was rebuilt after the war. the street's got layers like an onion once you start looking past the h&m and the tour groups

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
