It's a bit tucked away, you know? I noticed this tiny, almost hidden doorway, no number, just a slightly ajar door with a faint, sweet smell coming from inside. It smelled like...cinnamon and old paper? I'm dying to know what's behind that door. Is it some kind of secret society meeting place, a forgotten bakery, or just an old storage room? Seriously, the intrigue is killing me!

fwiw the "secret" part is prob the least interesting bit. that whole stretch of sewastrasse has these weird little courtyards from the 1900s, and a bunch of them got subdivided into workshops after the wall came down. i've seen a cobbler, a framer, and some guy who restores old radios all working out of spaces like that. the cinnamon could just be the turkish roastery's vent, sure, but old paper might be actual old paper. there's a bookbinder on the einbecker side, he's been there since the 90s and keeps his stock in a cellar that smells exactly like that. if you wanna check, look for a handwritten sign near the door, he puts up a little cardboard note when he's open. not a society, just a guy who likes his job.

i've actually been inside that one, not to snoop, just helped a friend move out of the building next door a few years back. the door leads to a little passage that connects to the back courtyard, and there's a room that used to be the hauswart's workshop, but the real smell comes from the old heating pipes wrapped in asbestos-cloth that's soaked up decades of whatever was stored nearby. the "cinnamon" is probably from the spice shop that was in the einbecker strasse corner building, they closed in the 90s but the grease and oils seeped into the shared brick wall. the old paper is just the mieterakten, they keep them in the same room, and the caretaker told me they never digitized anything before 2005. if you go back, check the left side of the doorframe, there's a tiny brass plaque, barely readable, says "werkstatt 1928", that's the only clue you'll get, and honestly it's more charming than any secret society.

ok so that's not sewastrasse, that's the old lichtenberg side, past the ringbahn. people forget but there used to be a bunch of small spice importers around here, pre-war, before the factories took over. cinnamon and old paper could legit be a leftover storeroom from one of those. but honestly, if it's the doorway i'm thinking of, near the corner with einbecker strasse, it's just the back entrance to the hausverwaltung's archive. they keep old tenant files and some weird cleaning supplies. i've seen the caretaker come out with a box of cinnamon-scented air freshener once, ha. not a secret society, more like a very boring secret.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
