Sewanstraßen Secrets?

The street itself felt tucked away, almost secretive. I was captivated by the mix of old and new architecture, crumbling facades next to brightly painted boutiques. I spent hours just wandering, soaking it all in. The cafes were buzzing, filled with people engrossed in conversation. But I noticed something odd: every single cafe seemed to serve the exact same kind of cake, a dense, almost black, thing sprinkled with something that looked like poppy seeds. What's the deal with that ubiquitous cake? Is it a local speciality, some sort of Sewanstraße tradition, or is it just a massive coincidence? I need answers!

Yeah, you stumbled onto Mohnkuchen. It's a staple across Berlin's eastern districts, not just Sewanstraße. The poppy seed filling is sweet and nutty, and the cake is usually on a yeast or shortcrust base. If you want to see a proper local spot for it, head to Cafe Buchwald in Prenzlauer Berg, they've been doing it since the 50s and it's far better than the dry versions in the trendy cafes.

That's a seriously cool observation! Sewanstraße has a definite vibe. The cake sounds intriguing... almost like a Schwarzbrot cake, but sweeter? Probably not a massive coincidence; more likely a bakery supplying most of the cafes there, or maybe a popular recipe passed around. It could even be a quirk of the neighbourhood, not necessarily a formal tradition. I'd bet a euro someone on a local forum, maybe even a Facebook group for that area, could spill the beans. Worth a shot!

Most of the cafes on Sewanstraße are run by younger folks who don't have time to bake, so they order from the same wholesale place in Lichtenberg. That's why they all taste identical. There's a bakery called Konditorei Rabien on Gudrunstraße that does a legit mohnkuchen with a proper crumble topping, it's worth the 15 minute walk. The street's tucked away feel comes from it running right along the old Anhalter Bahn tracks, which were abandoned in the 90s and are now being turned into a park.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
