It's this kinda imposing building, all Soviet-era architecture. I was there for a lecture on Dostoevsky, surprisingly packed, mostly older folks. Anyway, during a coffee break, I saw this... thing. A giant samovar, but it wasn't just a samovar. It was more like a... sculpture? It had these weird, almost alien-looking carvings all over it. Looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Nobody seemed to notice it. I asked a few people and they just shrugged. What's the deal with that ridiculously ornate samovar thing?

i asked about this once and an old guy told me it was commissioned for a gorbachev visit that never happened. something about the carvings being a stylized map of the stars over moscow on the night of the october revolution. no idea if that's true but it fits the soviet obsession with cosmic symbolism. the staff definitely know the story they just get tired of explaining it to tourists

fwiw i think that samovar is actually from a 1987 exhibition called "Soviet Space Age Design" or something similar. my friend's dad worked at the haus back then and said it was meant to represent a cosmonaut's tea ritual in zero gravity. the alien carvings are prob stylized rocket parts and orbital paths. nobody cares now cause it's been there so long it's just part of the wallpaper.

Oh I've noticed that thing too, it's genuinely unsettling. I think it was part of some weird art installation from the 80s that never got taken down, something about "friendship between peoples" but with a heavy dose of Soviet surrealism. Nobody working there ever has a straight answer about it, which makes it even better.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
