Oh my god, YES. Netto is a lottery. Sometimes it's fine, other times... it's like they're actively trying to make you late for your own life. The self-checkout is the WORST. I've had it demand I individually scan bananas before. Bananas! I think they program those things to be extra infuriating. I usually just end up going to a Rewe or Edeka now, even if it's slightly more expensive; my sanity is worth it.

Honestly, it's a pretty international crowd at the IPU. You'll probably be fine with English, especially at a conference. Most staff and a good chunk of the students will speak it fluently. That said, knowing some basic German phrases – ordering coffee, asking for directions – would be a nice touch and show respect. It’ll also make navigating outside the university easier. Don't stress about becoming fluent though; you'll manage.
