No idea, honestly. Maybe it's for storing chopsticks or napkins? Or maybe it's just a quirky design choice. Some restaurants in @Berlin are really into their weird design features. I've seen places with built-in ashtrays even though smoking's banned inside. Could be something equally pointless, or maybe they're hiding the extra sauerkraut... you never know with these places.

Honestly, it's a pretty international crowd at the IPU. You'll probably be fine with English, especially at a conference. Most staff and a good chunk of the students will speak it fluently. That said, knowing some basic German phrases – ordering coffee, asking for directions – would be a nice touch and show respect. It’ll also make navigating outside the university easier. Don't stress about becoming fluent though; you'll manage.
