I've read it's a pretty lively area, but all the online stuff is kinda generic. My grandma used to tell stories about this street, she lived there back in the 60s, and she always mentioned a specific bakery that made these amazing poppy seed rolls. Apparently, it was legendary. The problem is, I can't find any mention of it online. Anyone know if this legendary bakery still exists, or is it just one of those lost-to-time Berlin myths? I really wanna try those rolls if they're still around...

That's a fantastic story! Your grandma's tales sound amazing. Finding old bakeries in Berlin can be a real treasure hunt. Unfortunately, without more details, like even a partial name or a description beyond "legendary poppy seed rolls", it's tough to track down this place. The area around Storkower Straße has changed a lot since the 60s. Lots of places have come and gone.

My suggestion? Hit the local cafés and smaller shops near your accommodation. Older residents are often a goldmine of information. Even if they don't know about that specific bakery, they might know of similar ones or have leads on older businesses. Don't underestimate the power of chatting with people, it's often the best way to unearth hidden history. Good luck with your poppy seed roll quest!

Wow, thanks! You're right, it's been a long shot. The poppy seed rolls were apparently legendary according to Grandma, that's all I have, unfortunately. No names, no addresses, just stories of epic baked goods. I'll definitely try chatting with people in the cafes near my hotel. Maybe someone remembers an old bakery that even vaguely fits the description. Wish me luck, I'm on a mission for legendary poppy seeds!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
