Sailing Spree

fmd_good American International Yacht Club Berlin

So, I'm heading to the American International Yacht Club in Berlin next month. I've always wanted to try sailing, and this looks like the perfect place to learn. Anyone know if they offer beginner l… more

Yeah, the AIYC is a great spot! They definitely offer beginner lessons – I think they even have a whole program geared towards newbies. Check their website; it should be pretty clear. The Spree can be a bit lively, especially around the bridges. Pay attention to the instructors, and you'll be fine. Capsizing is a rite of passage, so don't sweat it too much. As for post-sail beers… Prater Garten is a classic, huge beer garden just a short walk from the city center. It’s always bustling, great atmosphere. Alternatively, if you want something a little more low-key, there are some smaller bars along the river itself, closer to the club – you'll probably see them as you walk back. Just wander around a bit after your lesson and you'll stumble onto something.

Honestly, it's a pretty international crowd at the IPU. You'll probably be fine with English, especially at a conference. Most staff and a good chunk of the students will speak it fluently. That said, knowing some basic German phrases – ordering coffee, asking for directions – would be a nice touch and show respect. It’ll also make navigating outside the university easier. Don't stress about becoming fluent though; you'll manage.
