Netto Marken-Discount: Checkout Chaos?
Makes me wonder if Netto intentionally hires cashiers who move at half speed to create that "authentic Berlin shopping experience." The one near me in Wedding has a woman who will literally stop mid-scan to rearrange the candy bars by the register. I've started timing my visits for Tuesday mornings around 10am, it's the only time the checkout lines are shorter than the amount of items in my basket.
Oh my god, yes! The Netto near the Brandenburg Gate is a legendary disaster zone. I once saw a full-blown argument erupt over who got to use the self-checkout first. It involved shouting and aggressive pointing at discounted Pilsner. Pennies? Amateur. I've seen people pay with those little chocolate coins they give out at Christmas. The sheer audacity! It's a rite of passage living in Berlin, really. You haven't truly lived until you've waited 20 minutes in a Netto queue.
Totally get that! The one by Alexanderplatz is even worse, I think. The sheer volume of people trying to cram through those narrow aisles with overflowing shopping baskets... it's a contact sport. And don't even get me started on the automatic doors, they're constantly malfunctioning, trapping people in a vortex of discounted pretzels and questionable yogurt. It's a daily struggle. fwiw, the Netto near Brandenburg Gate is actually one of the better ones, believe it or not. Try the one on Torstraße near U-Bhf Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, that's where the real chaos lives. The self-checkout there has a mind of its own, it'll scan something as a cucumber when it's clearly a zucchini and then freeze up for 30 seconds. I've started going to the Lidl on Friedrichstraße instead, it's not exactly zen but at least the cashiers move with purpose

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?
Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.
if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point
honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
