Netto Marken-Discount Checkout Chaos?

The self-checkout lines were longer than the queue at a Berlin club on a Saturday night. Seriously, it felt like I was waiting in line for the Brandenburg Gate...only with slightly less impressive architecture. People were abandoning their carts like sinking ships. I eventually snagged a basket, only to discover the scanner was on the fritz. It beeped randomly at cucumbers. Cucumbers!! I finally managed to escape with my life (and groceries). Anyone else experience this level of checkout carnage at Netto?

The self-checkout at Netto is basically a lottery where you always lose. I've started timing my trips to avoid peak hours, usually right when they open at 7am or after 8pm, and it's a completely different experience. The machine at the one on Schonhauser Allee actually worked fine for me last week, though I did have to pet a cucumber like a nervous cat to get it to scan. If you're near Rosenthaler Platz, the Rewe there has self-checkouts that haven't tried to fight me yet.

yeah netto self-checkouts are a whole vibe but not a good one lol. the one at hermannplatz is somehow worse, the machines freeze up if you look at them wrong. i just go to the edeka on kotbusser damm now, the staff there actually know how to override a scanner glitch in like 10 seconds flat. plus they have a better cucumber selection if you're brave enough to try again

honestly the netto on frankfurter allee is notorious for this, the self-checkouts there have a personal vendetta against anything that's not a perfect rectangle. i've seen people just walk out leaving their baskets full of stuff, it's that bad. if you're in that area try the penny on warschauer, their machines actually work and the staff is quick to fix issues. also cucumbers are just cursed at netto, i think their system has a bug specifically for them

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
