Cramped Quarters?

Felt like showering in a phone booth. But the location was killer! So easy to get everywhere. Made up for the lack of space, I guess. Question is: do they offer any kind of upgrade for slightly less claustrophobic accommodations?

ngl the room sizes near alex are a known thing, those hotels were designed for efficiency not comfort. if you want more space without leaving the area, check out the ibis styles on brunnenstraße instead, their rooms are noticeably bigger and the shower is actually a proper cubicle. it's a 5 minute tram ride from alex but you get a real window and a desk that isn't touching the bed

fwiw, a lot of those Alexplatz hotels are just old GDR-era Plattenbau buildings chopped up into tiny rooms, so the layout is kinda fixed. i've had luck asking for a room at the end of the hall, they're sometimes a bit bigger because of the fire escape or window placement. also check if they have a "business" or "superior" category on their own website, it's usually like 15-20 euros more but the room is actually a normal size, not just a slightly wider phone booth

Yeah, Berlin hotels, especially the budget ones near Alexanderplatz, can be...cozy. I've stayed in a few that felt similar. They rarely advertise upgrades directly, it's more of a case-by-case thing depending on occupancy. Try contacting the hotel directly, email's usually best, and politely explain your situation. Mentioning your experience might get them to offer something slightly bigger, even if it means a small price bump. Worth a shot! Failing that, next time, book further out from the Platz, prices generally go down the further you get, and you can often find larger rooms for comparable prices.

That's solid advice, thanks! I didn't even think about emailing them directly. I figured it was all automated. The price bump wouldn't be a huge deal, a little extra space is worth it for a more comfortable stay. Good point about booking further out from Alexanderplatz too, lesson learned for next time! I'll definitely keep that in mind.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
