Goethe's Secret?

I spent ages reading the exhibits, really got lost in his life and works. But the whole place felt... unfinished? Like there was a secret room or passageway they weren't showing. Something tucked away, maybe even some hidden letters or sketches. Anyone know if there are any rumored hidden areas within the memorial? I'd love to hear any stories about unusual finds or experiences there.

That study on the second floor is real, I've seen it. But there's a detail people miss. The memorial sits on a plot that used to connect to a larger garden complex in the 1800s. Some of the old property maps at the Landesarchiv show a narrow corridor that ran from the back of the building toward what's now a courtyard. It was bricked up during renovations in the 1920s. No hidden letters, just a structural remnant, but it explains why the layout feels slightly off. If you're into the botanical side of Goethe, the Herbarium Berolinense has a few of his plant specimens that aren't shown at the memorial. You'd need to email them for an appointment.

the building itself is a bit of a frankenstein honestly, it was originally three separate apartments they mashed together, so those weird corners and blocked off doors are just architectural leftovers from that. my friend did a tour there once where the guide mentioned a sealed up dumbwaiter shaft in the back wall of the ground floor, nothing secret just a practical thing from when it was a private home. if you want the real hidden goethe stuff go to the staatsbibliothek on potsdamer platz, they have his actual handwriting on some drafts that are way more intimate than anything in the memorial

not a secret room exactly but there's a small study on the second floor that's usually roped off, i think they used it as storage during the 90s restorations. if you go on a weekday when its less busy sometimes the staff will let you peek in if you ask nicely. theres a desk in there with some reproduction letters that aren't in the main exhibits, mostly drafts of his botanical stuff which is kinda cool if you're into that side of his work

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
