One kept making this weird groaning noise, and I swear I saw a ghost in one. Or maybe it was just the weird lighting. Anyway, my question is: Are those elevators haunted, or just really, really old and creaky? I'm genuinely curious.

The groaning is definitely just the hydraulics, those old Schindler lifts from the 60s all sound like that. But if you want a real ghost story, ask the front desk about the night porter who worked there in the 80s, some of the older staff still swear they hear his keys jingling in the corridor at 3 AM. The eggs are worth the creaky ride though, and if you're back for dinner the rouladen in the restaurant is legit.

i think it's just the tiergarten charm tbh. those old lifts in the diplomatic quarter have that specific groan because they're manual hydraulic systems from the 50s, not haunted. the one at hotel brandenburger hof makes the same noise and it's definitely just the pressure valves. worth noting the breakfast buffet there is also killer though, try their berliner pfannkuchen if you go back

Haha, the groaning elevator! Classic Berlin. Seriously though, those old buildings are full of surprises. I've never seen a ghost, but the elevator malfunctions in older hotels around that area are legendary. Probably just old and need a serious overhaul. Wouldn't surprise me if they've been running since the Kaiser's time. The groaning is probably just the metal protesting. Enjoy the great eggs, though, that's a win!

Oh my god, the groaning elevator! You weren't kidding. It sounded like a dying walrus. Seriously though, you're right about the old buildings, there's a definite vibe. I half expected a monocle to fall out of a portrait. The eggs were amazing, though. Totally worth the slightly terrifying lift ride. I should have taken a video of it. Next time!

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
