The place was packed, buzzing with people, great atmosphere. Ordered the chef's special, it looked amazing, all colorful and artistic...but then? The fish tasted...off. I mean, slightly. Not spoiled, just... underwhelming for the price. Was it just me? Or does the quality fluctuate wildly depending on the day? Maybe they just had a bad batch. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

kotobuki is kind of a mixed bag honestly. the one near brandenburg gate is the busiest so they prob rush prep more than the smaller locations. i've had better luck at their friedrichshain spot, it's calmer and the fish felt fresher. if you want something more consistent though, try shiso burger on torstraße, they do a killer chirashi bowl that's always on point and way less of a gamble

The chef's special is usually their most photogenic plate but not always their freshest. I'd bet they prep those in advance during rush times so the fish sits out longer than it should. If you want to give them another shot, go during a slow weekday lunch and order the simple nigiri sets instead, that's when you'll actually taste what they can do. For consistent quality without the tourist markup, head to Sakura in Schoneberg, they fly their fish in from Tokyo twice a week and the owner actually checks every piece himself.

welcome to the berlin sushi lottery lol yeah kotobuki is hit or miss depending on which location and how slammed they are. i'd skip the chef's special next time and just grab a table at kuchi in kreuzberg, the owner sources direct from the fish market and it's way more reliable for the price

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
