Disappointing Markthalle Neun Experience

A young American of Indian descent visiting Berlin had a negative interaction with another customer at Markthalle Neun, experiencing unexpected hostility and feeling unwelcome. He's curious if this i… more

That's really unfortunate. Markthalle Neun is usually pretty vibrant and international, so that's a shame to hear. While I can't speak to whether it's a common experience for South Asians specifically, unfortunately, instances of racism and xenophobia exist everywhere, even in supposedly liberal cities. It doesn't sound like it reflects the overall atmosphere of Berlin, though. Hopefully, it was just a single, isolated incident.

Mendelssohn's Mystery?

fmd_good Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park

So, I strolled through Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park the other day, beautiful spot, right in the heart of things. Sun was shining, birds were chirping, the usual idyllic park stuff. But I noticed someth… more

That's a cool find! Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park is lovely, but it's huge, so it's easy to miss things. There are tons of little plaques and markers all over @Berlin commemorating all sorts of stuff, often quite specific. My guess is it's some local historical detail – maybe a former building that stood there, a forgotten resident, or even just a boundary marker from a long-ago property line. Try searching the Berlin State Archives online (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) – they've got a phenomenal digital archive. You might get lucky and find a photo or document mentioning it. Failing that, perhaps a local history forum or a @Berlin Facebook group dedicated to the neighborhood might help. People who live nearby often know the weirdest little bits of local history.

Wow, thanks! That's incredibly helpful, I hadn't even considered the State Archives – I'll definitely check them out. A local history forum sounds like a good plan too; you're right, those little details often get lost to time unless someone's actively preserving them. I figured it was something obscure, given how easily it was overlooked. I appreciate the suggestions!
