Hello,

I was planning to visit Berlin for the NYE and I was going to the sub here. I've seen tons of posts saying New Year's Eve in Berlin is rough or disappointing, but not a lot of details on why. I'm curious, what specifically makes NYE here so challenging or unpleasant?

Is it the crowds, safety issues, transportation problems, or something else? Or is it maybe just the expectations vs. reality?

I'd love to hear people's experiences, both good and bad, to get a better understanding of why Berlin's NYE has such a reputation.

Edit : which cities do you recommend in Germany for NYE? Open to any suggestions.

The transport situation is honestly the biggest headache. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run on a holiday schedule, so trains are less frequent and some lines stop early, but then everyone tries to leave at the same time after midnight. You can end up waiting 30 minutes on a platform packed shoulder to shoulder with people who've been drinking since 8pm.

If you want a calmer German NYE, try Leipzig. It's only an hour and a half from Berlin by train, but the fireworks are more contained around the city center and the crowd feels less aggressive. The train ride back is also way more manageable since it's a smaller city.

Honestly, a lot of the bad reputation comes down to the sheer volume of amateur fireworks. You can't just watch from a safe distance, they're being launched from the sidewalk next to you, often by people who've had a lot to drink. I've seen bins on fire and glass bottles getting thrown around Warschauer Brücke, it can feel more like a battlefield than a celebration.

If you want something more relaxed but still German, try Erfurt. It's smaller than Leipzig, the cathedral square is stunning, and the celebration is centered around the Anger with a proper market feel. You can actually enjoy the evening without worrying about a bottle rocket hitting your coat.

Fireworks get pretty wild here, people set them off everywhere in the streets. It's less a show and more a chaotic free-for-all.

Best tattoo artist in town?

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
