Living in Wedding?

What are the chances… Hello, I'm moving to Germany in a month, and I'll be living in the Wedding district with friends. I've never been to Berlin before, so I wanted to ask how really safe Wedding is? What are the chances that something bad will happen to me in the broad daylight (considering the fact that I am a woman)? Any advices of do's and don't's? I will live only a few minutes from a bus station if that makes a difference.

Edit: apparently I was wrong, and the area I'll be living in is actually Reinickendorf, on border with Wedding (I'll live close to the park where the Nazarethkirchhof II cemetery is located). So the question now is "how safe is Reinickendorf?" 😅

honestly Reinickendorf is fine, its way more residential and quiet than Wedding proper. that area near Nazarethkirchhof II is mostly families and older folks, not really a party zone so you wont get the drunk tourists or late night chaos

the bus station thing is fine, buses run pretty regularly during the day. just keep your phone in your pocket and bag zipped on the U8 or any busy line, same as any city really. the park itself is nice for walks but I'd avoid it alone after dark, not bc its dangerous but bc its just empty and creepy

one thing nobody tells you about that border area is the food situation. the Thai place on Residenzstraße near the S-Bahn is legit, and the turkish supermarkets on Müllerstraße have the best produce for cheap. stick to those and you'll be sorted

i live a few streets over from there and honestly you'll be fine. that border area is pretty sleepy, lots of old buildings and gardens. the worst i've dealt with is drunk guys at the s-bahn on weekend nights but they're usually just loud, not aggressive.

one thing i'd say is the bus frequency drops off hard after 10pm on some lines, so check the BVG app before you head out. the 122 runs pretty late but the 221 can leave you waiting 20 minutes. also the tram on scharnweberstraße is a lifesaver if you're going towards wedding proper.

for cafes check out Cafe Pförtner on Residenzstraße, it's tiny but the cake is solid and they have good wifi. and the back courtyard at the Nazarethkirche is a nice spot to sit if you need quiet, just ignore the occasional group of teens smoking there.

reinickendorf is basically the quiet suburbs, you're fine. that area near the cemetery is mostly residential and the park is full of dog walkers and families during the day. biggest culture shock will be how dead everything is after 8pm compared to wedding proper

for buses the 122 is your best bet, runs every 10 mins during peak and the stop at Residenzstraße/Nordbahnstraße is well lit. if you need the U6 at night the walk from Kurt-Schumacher-Platz is fine but the path through the park is dark, just stick to the main road

the real pro tip is the bio market on Residenzstraße near the S-Bahn, saturdays they have a guy selling mushroom boxes from Brandenburg. way better than the supermarket stuff and the old lady who runs the cheese counter will give you samples if you're nice

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
