BER Airport - What is this???

I just don't get how a first class economy that prides itself in "efficiency" and engineering can launch a new airport with this level of ineptitude.

Case #217: Security. Why, oh, why does the airport security agent need to MANUALLY push the plastic containers through the X-ray scanner? I don't know how many times I've been in a long-ass line and I stand there watching as the security person chats with a traveler and forgets to push the containers through. The containers just wait there, piling up, and we all have to wait until the security guy/gal remembers to puuuuuuush them through.... and only then can the next person can walk up and unload their stuff.

Seriously, this adds 50% to the waiting time. This is a solved problem and every other country in the world has implemented it.

Sometimes I feel like Berliners just like the rustic charm of the 1800s before digitalization and machines.

honestly the manual tray thing is just peak berlin energy at this point. the worst part isn't even the delay, it's that they have the conveyor belts installed and working at the other security checkpoints - terminals A and B have them fine. but whoever designed C thought nah, let's keep it analog. i just go to the little-known check-in area near the s-bahn station these days, it's quieter and the staff actually push the trays on autopilot.

the manual tray thing is annoying but have you seen the berlin spirit pinball machine they put near the mcdonald's in terminal a? it's a weird flex for a city that can't figure out basic airport logistics. if you really want to save time, skip the main security lines and use the one near the s-bahn exit on the ground floor - it's usually dead and the staff there have a rhythm going. still a mess but at least you're not watching someone daydream about their weekend plans while your bags sit there.

lol welcome to berlin, where we spent a decade and billions on an airport that still feels like a wip. the security thing is maddening but honestly it's not even the worst part - wait til you see the baggage claim area where the carousels just... stop working for 20 minutes at a time. i've started timing my arrivals around the schönefeld shuttle just to avoid the main terminal chaos when i can.

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
