Hi everyone.

I find myself in Berlin for a couple of months for work and am looking for the best yarn shops, potentially also embroidery.

I can Google just fine, but there is really nothing like hearing the experiences of local crafters. So which yarn and embroidery stores do you prefer and why? I'm willing to travel for the right place so anywhere in Berlin is fine!

if you're near kreuzberg, check out kollwitzplatz markt on a saturday morning - there's a small stall with handmade yarns from local sheep breeds, not a shop but the wool quality is unreal. for embroidery, ping me at stoff & stil on frankfurter allee, they've got a solid DMC thread wall and the staff will cut you exactly what you need instead of pushing kits

For embroidery supplies, make your way to Himmelbeet near Gesundbrunnen. It's a community garden with a tiny shop that carries hand-dyed embroidery floss and naturally dyed wools you won't find at the big retailers. The selection rotates with what's in season, so it's worth checking their Instagram before you go. For yarn, I'd skip the chains and try Wollsucht in Neukolln instead, they stock a lot of German mill ends and indie dyers for reasonable prices, plus they have a cozy sit-and-knit corner if you want to chat with locals.

honestly just hit up Frau Wolle near U-Bhf Seestraße, they have a decent selection and the owner actually knows her stuff. not the biggest shop but way better vibes than the touristy places

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
