Hey there,

I've been trying to distance myself a bit from the news back home since moving here earlier in the year, and also stay a bit more up-to-date on local and national news.

I was wondering how everyone stays in the loop here? Is there a specific source that most use or is a bit more varied?

For local Berlin stuff I actually read the Berliner Zeitung, especially their English-language section if your German isn't solid yet. It's got a good mix of the political nonsense and the cultural stuff happening in Neukolln or Friedrichshain. For national news I just use the Tagesspiegel app, it's less dry than the Tagesschau and has decent commentary on the Bundestag drama.

I mostly get mine from rbb24, the regional public broadcaster's site. Their reporting on Berlin-specific stuff like the S-Bahn chaos or Bezirkspolitik is way more detailed than what you'd get from the national outlets. For national news, Tagesschau app is the standard one, just the 8pm version in text form. I'd avoid the Bild website unless you want a headache.

I've settled into a bit of a routine with it. For the day to day Berlin noise I use the Berliner Morgenpost newsletter, the one that lands in the morning is short enough to read while my coffee is brewing and covers the main Bezirke stories. For national politics and deeper analysis I actually switched to a mix of Die Zeit and the taz, the taz is a bit left leaning but they have a great Berlin section that actually goes to Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen meetings and reports on what the local CDU or Greens are fighting about. Just don't expect any of the English language outlets to cover the small stuff like where the new Fahrradstraße is going in or why the U7 has been a disaster for two weeks straight.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
