Berliners, Suit up!

So. I'm M, mid-thirties, everyone's getting married, having kids, people start dying. So I have plenty of formal invitations coming in, and nothing to wear. It feels like everything relating to dressing particularly well here is, well, very expensive Ku'damm stuff ('brands' which I care not for) or off-the-rack stuff that will be ill-fitted or polyester.

I used to own suits back home but my body changed and in Berlin, I'm on the hyper-casual (read here, sloppy combat boots and jean jackets) end of the clothing spectrum being fortunate enough to not have to dress up to work to be treated like a professional.

I find myself often confronted with situations where a nice tailored suit or even just a nice jacket above a turtleneck or button-up would have worked more in the situation. There are plenty of nice places in Berlin (and plenty of expensive ones too) and I don't know much about it.

Would some of you dandiest of gents, finest of ladies, and everyone in between who enjoys wearing suits, sakkos, tweed, and so on, help direct me a bit? What are your places for a good bargain, what places do amazing old-school tailoring work, how much do you normally spend? Who gets your measurements?

I'd like to spend about 300 EUR, open to go up to 500 for something particularly nice. Ideally a full 2-piece suit, summer or fall (I have a Wedding in September and one in a tropical country in November), light and casual. I have two suits already, but I doubt they fit my figure, maybe you can recommend tailors that specialize in altering things?

No need for custom-tailored although that would be nice, I suspect it's a bit more expensive than my budget.

Do you folks have recommendations in terms of places?

honestly for that budget and a september wedding i'd hit up the weekend flea market at mauerpark before 11am. there's a guy near the friedrichstraße end who specializes in italian cuts, i got a linen-canvas zegna jacket there for 40 eur once. pair that with some decent trousers from ansons on frankfurter allee, they have a clearance section in the back that nobody checks, often real wool trousers for 60-80

for the tropical wedding in november you want lightweight stuff, maybe look at suit supply on torstraße. their entry level suits are around 400 and they do free basic alterations in-house, shoulders and sleeves included. the cut is more modern but not crazy slim, and the fabric holds up in humidity better than heavy wools. only catch is their turnaround can be 2-3 weeks so don't wait til last minute

if you find a vintage suit that's close but needs work, try schneiderei jacob on weserstraße in neukölln. old hungarian guy who does real tailoring for like 60 for a full suit adjustment, but he's slow and his german is rough so bring photos of what you want. cash only too

check out herrenausstatter at rosenstraße near hackescher markt, they have a clearance basement where last season stuff goes for 50-60% off. found a real linen suit there for 250 last summer, full canvas, just needed the sleeves shortened. they do the alterations in-house for like 40 and it's ready in a week

for the tropical wedding honestly get something from uniqlo's linen line, their blazers are around 100 and they have a tailoring service at the alexa store that does quick adjustments for 15. it won't last forever but for one trip in humidity it's smart. pair it with some chinos from cos on torstraße, they have a nice tapered cut that dresses up well

if you want one suit that works for both, hit the hugo boss outlet at alexa, their slim fit stuff is often on sale for 300-350 and the fabric blends hold up in heat better than pure wool. just skip anything with polyester lining, check the tag before you buy

for 300-500 you're not getting fully custom, but you can get close with off the rack plus a good tailor. check out vintageladen on torstraße, they have surprisingly good condition vintage suits from the 60s-80s that are often half-canvassed and real wool, usually under 100 eur. then take it to änderungsschneiderei kudamm near savignyplatz, they do proper alterations not just hemming, about 50-80 for a full suit adjustment

if you want new, peek & cloppenburg at alexanderplatz has decent mid-range stuff when on sale, i've grabbed a s.Oliver suit there for 200 that looked fine after tailoring. for something more interesting try the 2nd hand stores in friedrichshain around boxhagener platz, you can find scabal or boggi stuff for 50-80 if you look

the real trick is spending 250 on the suit and 100-150 on a tailor who knows how to take in the waist and adjust the shoulders. that beats a 500 off-the-rack suit that doesn't fit right

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
