Why are people asking to use my phone?

So, multiple times now, quite ordinary looking people (at least not homeless or very drug addicted) have asked to use my phone. In the Kreuzberg area mostly. Why is that? Never experienced it somewher… So, multiple times now, quite ordinary looking people (at least not homeless or very drug addicted) have asked to use my phone. In the Kreuzberg area mostly. theres also a whole market for this, people buy stolen phones right at Kottbusser Tor so a working unlocked phone is basically cash. thats why they specifically want yours in hand, not you dialing. i just say sorry Akku ist leer and keep walking, no eye contact. works every time.

half the time its not even a scam, its just people whose prepaid ran out and they need to call their dealer or their Freundin to come get them. Kreuzberg has a lot of folks living hand to mouth so no Guthaben on the SIM is super common. i usually just offer to dial and hold the phone myself with speaker on, weeds out the ones with bad intentions pretty fast.

worth knowing that some of these askers arent even after the phone itself but the SIM, they want to make a quick international call to a number abroad where the real money is in the connection theyre running, or theyre testing if ur line is active for a later scam. kottbusser tor & görlitzer bahnhof are the hotspots for it. my move is to just point at the next kiosk and say "da vorne kannste telefonieren" and keep moving, they never follow up

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
