Is it just me or is BVG doing increasingly more ticket controls?

They've definitely been more aggressive about it. I've noticed they're targeting specific lines and times now instead of just random spot checks. The U6 between Friedrichstrasse and Hallesches Tor gets hit hard during rush hour, and they're always waiting right at the top of the escalators so you can't duck back down. A friend got fined last month for forgetting to validate his monthly ticket, which feels like a cash grab since he clearly had a valid subscription.

nah you're not wrong, they've definitely ramped it up. the plainclothes guys are everywhere now, especially on the U7 and U8 at night. saw three checks in one day at Hermannplatz last week, which felt excessive even for Berlin standards. i think they're trying to make up for lost revenue during corona or something

honestly i think they're just hitting their targets now. used to be you could go months without seeing a controller, now i see them at least twice a week on my commute on the M29 bus. the trick is they're not even hiding that well anymore, just standing at the back door of the bus so you can't get off in time. saw one dude try to jump out the middle door at Nollendorfplatz and a second guy was already waiting there. they're def coordinating better

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
