Is Berlin currently worth it for an international?

I came across the Chancenkarte program and I scored 6. (Which I believe makes eligible) I unfortunately have no German language knowledge but I am planning on learning it. I also have some skills that might help me get a job not necessarily in something related to my degree (video editing mainly). I will also have a little budget of around €3-5k to help me settle and look for work for a little while. Does anyone have any advice for me please ? Thank you so much!!

The masters path is probably your smartest move with that budget. A student visa lets you work 120 full days or 240 half days per year, which buys you time to build a network and learn German at a VHS course for under 200 a semester. Just know that your 3-5k will vanish fast on a deposit and first month's rent in a WG, so you'd want a job lined up within a month or two of arriving.

Video editing work exists but it's mostly through contacts. I've seen people scrape by on Fiverr or local Facebook groups like "Berlin Creative Freelancers", but the real money is in agency work where German is usually required. The FU and HU are solid choices for English-taught communication programs, but also check the Berlin University of the Arts if you want something more media-focused. Apply by May for an October start or you'll wait another year.

yeah 3-5k is tight tbh, most people i know who moved here with that burned through it in like 6 weeks. the masters idea is solid but honestly you'd need to show proof of like 11k in a blocked account for the visa anyway, so that budget is way under. maybe save up more first or look at smaller cities where rent is cheaper, like leipzig or halle, still decent vibe and way easier on the wallet

honestly, 3-5k is gonna go fast here. a room in a shared flat will run you 600-800€ with deposit, so you're looking at maybe 2 months of rent before you even eat anything. the chancenkarte is nice on paper but finding a job without german is tough unless you're in tech or can land something at a startup that operates in english. video editing is a decent angle but most gigs here are word of mouth and you'd be competing with locals who already have networks.

your best bet might be to look at the masters route instead of straight job hunting. the public universities here are basically free (semester fee is like 300€) and a student visa gives you a part-time work permit. the FU and HU have english-taught communication programs, plus you'd get the student health insurance which is way cheaper than the public option. just keep in mind the application deadlines are usually months in advance, like may or july for october start.

Best tattoo artist in town?

arrow_drop_up 67 arrow_drop_down

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
