Hi,

My car battery is flat, and I'm due to drive back to the UK tomorrow. I've bought a portable battery charger but it's not working, I suspect the battery is too flat!

I'm staying at the motel und Rasthous near Westkreutz station. Does anyone know of a service that I can call out? My German is not very good...

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

if you're near westkreuz, the adac has a roadside assistance hotline that works even if you're not a member, just costs a bit more. they've got an english option on the phone so language won't be an issue. also worth checking if your travel insurance or car rental includes breakdown cover, some uk policies extend to europe. worst case, walk to the shell station on heerstraße, the guys there sometimes help with jump starts for a few euros

honestly the portable charger might still work if you leave it connected for 10-15 minutes before trying, some need time to build up enough charge to trigger the car's computer. if not, there's a werkstatt on kaiserdamm called auto-service westkreuz that's open until 8pm and they do callouts for like 30 euros, the guy speaks decent english from dealing with tourists. also check if ur hotel reception has a set of jumper cables, most of the motels around there keep them behind the desk for guests

The ADAC suggestion is solid, but if you want to skip the wait, try calling a taxi. A lot of the taxi drivers around Westkreuz carry jumper cables and will help you out for a tenner or so, just ask for "Starthilfe." The tankstelle at the corner of Heerstraße and Flatowallee is also a good bet, they've got a portable booster pack and the guys there speak enough English to sort you out. Just don't expect them to do it for free, maybe 15 to 20 euros.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
