Hello everyone,

Could it be that the mosquitoes in Berlin, or at least their saliva, have changed over the years? I remember that a mosquito bite used to leave just a slight bump on my skin that itched but quickly disappeared if left alone. However, this year, the mosquito bites in Berlin have been leaving bright red, jagged marks on my skin that last for 1, 2 weeks and itch intensely. The puncture point of the bite also develops a slightly bloody, hardening with scab even without me touching it.

Best regards.

Honestly I think you're not alone in noticing this. The tiger mosquito has been spreading in Berlin for a few years now, especially around parks and water-heavy areas like Tempelhofer Feld or along the Spree. They're more aggressive and their bites tend to cause way worse reactions than the regular ones we grew up with. The red welts and long healing time sound exactly like what people describe with those. If you're near any standing water or gardens with dense bushes, that's prob where they're breeding.

yeah the tiger mosquito thing is real, but i think there's also something to the fact that our immune systems just forgot how to deal with them after a couple mild summers. 2023 was super wet and warm, perfect breeding conditions, so the population exploded and everyone's getting hit harder. if you're near volkspark hasenheide or the landwehrkanal, those spots are notorious right now. try a local antihistamine gel from rossmann or dm, the ones with levocetirizine work way better than the old stuff

It's not just you, I've noticed it too and my dermatologist said it's likely the Asian tiger mosquito that's settled here. They're more aggressive and their bites cause a stronger histamine reaction in a lot of people. You can get a repellent with icaridin at DM or Rossmann, the regular Autan stuff works okay but the one in the green bottle with the tiger on it is better for these ones.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
