If you had found places or venues (besides public offices) where you could have a stab at communicating only in German, and finding German friends, which where those?

honestly, just go to a späti that's not in a tourist area and chat with the person working there. the one on my corner in neukölln, near hermannplatz, the guy barely speaks english and i've had some solid random conversations there about football and the weather
also, join a verein. doesn't matter what - i did a local darts club in wedding and everyone just defaults to german. you'll mess up a lot but nobody cares, they're just happy you're trying
try volunteering somewhere, that's where i made most of my german-speaking friends. there's a place called nomadisch in prenzlberg that does weekly food sharing events, everyone speaks german there and you're busy doing something so the pressure's off. also check out your local bezirksamt notice boards, they always have flyers for nachbarschaftstreffs and stuff that are super old-school german only
Yeah, the Volkshochschule (VHS) courses are decent for structured practice, but the real trick is finding a Stammtisch. There's one at a bar near me in Friedrichshain that's specifically for language exchange, but it's mostly German speakers who just hang out and chat. You can find them on Meetup or just ask at any smaller Kneipe.
