hi all!

I'll be in Berlin today and tomorrow and definitely want to hit some record stores while I'm there. I got a few on my list already, but I'm hoping for some suggestions from locals :)

I'm only interested in second hand records, no new pressings. I'm mainly into jazz, metal and alternative/experimental rock kind of stuff.

The ones I've already picked are:

Power Park

Schallplanet

Vinyl-A-Go-Go

Soultrade

Spacehall

any further suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!!! 🫶

You've got a good list already, but I'd add Groove Records near Frankfurter Tor. It's a small place with a very specific selection, mostly jazz and soul, and the owner prices things to move rather than to sit on the shelf. For metal and experimental, take a short walk to Vinylized on Revaler Strasse, it's in a courtyard and has a big second hand basement with bins you'll need to actually dig through, none of the curated high-price stuff. If you're near Schallplanet anyway, it's basically on the way.

if you're into jazz and experimental stuff, hit up hörspielplatz in neukölln. it's a small shop but the owner really knows his stuff, especially for weirdo jazz and krautrock. prices are fair too, not touristy like some places in mitte.

for metal, try coretex records in friedrichshain. they've got a solid second hand section in the basement, lots of underground stuff. it's a few blocks from warschauer str.

skip soultrade tbh, it's overpriced for what it is. power park is good though, that's my go-to for rock

for jazz and experimental stuff, check out wmf records in prenzlauer berg. it's a tiny basement spot near eberswalder str, the guy who runs it is an older collector with insane knowledge. he doesn't have a ton of metal but his jazz and weird rock sections are curated really well, stuff you won't find at spacehall

and for metal, go to heavy sound records in neukölln near hermannplatz. they focus on punk and metal, second hand section is a mess in the best way, you can dig for hours. prices are reasonable, i found a rare celtic frost bootleg there for 15€ last year

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
