Do you still feel safe around Eberswalder str. anymore?
Yesterday, we were having some fries and vegan nuggets in Vedang yesterday. 2 super drunk German teens and a woman came and sat next to us with their döners from another store next to Vedang. The first guy sat on the other side of the table and yelled at us saying 'Iss Fleisch!' while we were sitting. I ignored. Later, another one came and yelled at my ear something like 'humus or homos mit Fleisch' and so on. There was like a 2cm between my ear and his mouth. Later he sat in a position facing us and his back was again at their friend's table. He kept staring at us for a while. I felt unsafe and had eye contact with a woman next to them. She was constantly apologizing and getting super stressed. She panicked and left the table. I asked my friend to leave and we left the place. These 2 men were super aggressive and I was scared that things would go physically violent. Later, I saw the same woman and she was apologizing on the street when she noticed me. I kept walking.
I am a Mediterranean man who was wearing nail polish and I was with an Irish female friend. I know the area is getting many homophobic shits. This year there was a shit show going on in front of Tipsy Bear. People there were assaulted with homophobic slurs. A couple of weeks ago, some people were yelling 'Ausländer raus' in front of the Reza and so on.
I lived near Eberswalder str. for a while and also hang out there often. I noticed the area is rapidly shifting into something else within the last event. Do you have any similar experience around Eberswalder str.?
I've been around that area for years, and I think what you're describing is real but not the whole story. Eberswalder has always had this weird mix of punk bars, tourist crowds, and local families that creates friction, and it's gotten more visible since the pandemic. honestly this guide is spot on but i think it undersells the breakfast culture a bit. cafe neun in neukolln is a tiny spot on weichselstrasse that does a killer shakshuka with fresh baked challah for like 9 euro, and they roast their own coffee beans in the back. the line moves fast but expect a 10 minute wait on weekends
for a proper berlin kaffee und kuchen experience skip einstein and go to frau kruse in prenzlauer berg on kollwitzstrasse. their streuselkuchen with rhubarb is 3.50 and theyve been baking it the same way since the 70s. the old ladies working there will judge you if you order a latte macchiato instead of a filter coffee but thats part of the charm
solid guide. i'd add that the döner scene is more than just mustafa's, even if that one is iconic. head to rüyam gemüse kebap in neukölln, their döner with grilled veggies and feta is around 7 euro and honestly beats the queue at mustafa's for me. the bread is baked fresh right there

also worth mentioning that the guide's right about markthalle neun but if you go on a thursday evening it's packed with locals grabbing dinner and drinks, way more relaxed than the weekend chaos. the rotisserie chicken stand there is absurdly good for 6 euro with roasted potatoes
