Hello!

I will be terminated from my work soon, and trying to already prepare ahead towards a month or two of arbeitslosengeld to deal with the past years of burnout, and then spend time to focus on job searching. my current expected effective termination date is start of October. However, I might end up being a way to visit family out of Europe for two-three weeks that month.

I read on some places online that you might be asked to show up in an appointment at the AfA after you register as unemployed (already registered as jobseeker). But it seems really inconclusive. does anyone know if they still call you in person? and if so, how soon do they make an appointment for you, after you registered as unemplolyed?

Vielen Dank!

yeah they still do in-person appointments, at least at the berlin offices. when i registered at the one near s+u wedding last year, i got a letter about two weeks later with a time slot about three weeks out from that. so total maybe a month after registering

one thing to watch out for with the oktober trip -- they might try to schedule ur appointment while ur away. you can call them and push it back, but you gotta do it before the date. the sachbearbeiter i had was pretty chill about it but ymmv

also just fyi, if you're going out of europe for more than 21 days they can technically stop your alg I for those weeks. double check with them before u book anything

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
