Hello all! I've just landed in Berlin for a 3 week trip and I've made it just in time for Museums Sonntag and I want to make the most of it.

Which would you say are the best museums? Historical museums are top of my loft followed by art, design, film or any kind of quirky museum.

since you're here for Museums Sonntag, hit the DDR Museum first. its right on the Spree and gives you a real feel for everyday life in east berlin, like the inside of a plattenbau apartment and a trabant you can sit in. theres even a stasi surveillance exhibit that is creepy in the best way.

for quirky, go to the Computerspielemuseum on Karl-Marx-Allee. its all about the history of video games, from old arcade cabinets to the first consoles. not huge but fun and you can actually play most of the stuff.

if you want design, the Bauhaus Archiv is a bit out of the way near Tiergarten but has original furniture and prototypes. its small and feels a bit neglected tbh but worth it if you're into that clean 1920s aesthetic.

honestly for history you cant beat the Deutsches Historisches Museum on Unter den Linden. it covers everything from the middle ages to the wall falling, and the building itself is a mix of old baroque and modern glass by I.M. Pei which is cool.

for something more quirky check out the Museum der Dinge on Oranienstraße. its a collection of everyday objects from the 20th century, like old phones and packaging, but it tells you a lot about how people actually lived. also its in a pretty rough part of kreuzberg which adds to the vibe.

if youre into film the Filmmuseum at Potsdamer Platz is worth it, especially if you want to see original props from movies like Metropolis. it isnt huge but its well curated and you can combine it with a walk through the Sony Center.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
