yeah the "drinks menu switch" is a classic in some bars near rosenthaler platz. they hand you a menu with reasonable prices, then when the bill comes it's from a different one with double the cost. always snap a photo of the menu as soon as you sit down if something feels off. also the "charity clipboard" scammers near the east side gallery, they'll wave a petition in your face and get pushy about a "donation" but it's just cash in their pocket

ngl the rental deposit scam is way too common here. people post fake apartments on immoweb or wg-gesucht, ask for a "reservation fee" or the whole kaution via transfer before you even see the place. real landlords here don't ask for money upfront without a signed contract and keys in your hand. also be wary of the "tourist menu" trick in mitte, some restaurants charge 5 euro more for the same dish if you sit outside with a map. just check the price list before ordering

fwiw the "helpful stranger" at the ATM is still going strong near Warschauer Str. they'll stand real close and claim your card got stuck, then try to swap it or watch you type your PIN. also the "cigarette scam" where someone asks for a lighter, then gets aggressive if you don't hand over the whole pack. honestly most of these are just opportunists, keep your wallet in your front pocket and headphones out in busy spots

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
