Dear Bärliners, I hope you can help me,

I love to go to the capital at least once or twice a year to party or fill my heart with culture and experience. However, it's always at short notice and accommodation is always very expensive. Even the Generator has quadrupled its prices and if you don't book in time you pay €65 per night in an 8-bed room😳 ...

Are there any alternatives I could try?

I'm very grateful for any tips🤗😘

honestly skip the hostels altogether and check the couchsurfing app or bewelcome, especially for short notice. the community in berlin is pretty active and you'll probably find someone in mitte or neukölln with a spare couch for free. if that feels too sketchy, try the meininger chain near ostbahnhof, they sometimes have single rooms for like 45 euros if you book the day before. just avoid anything near alexanderplatz, those prices are a joke

You could try the Ostel hostel in Friedrichshain, it's in an old GDR building and dorm beds usually land around 25-30 euros a night if you book a week ahead. Another solid option is the A&O chain, they've got a few locations around the city and the one at Hauptbahnhof often has last-minute deals for under 40 euros. If you're really in a pinch, check the "Last Minute" section on Hostelworld a day or two before you go, I've snagged a bed at the Circus Hostel for 20 euros that way.

have you checked out the comet hostel near gesundbrunnen? it's a bit out of the way but super cheap, like 15-20 euros for a dorm if you book a few days ahead. also try spot a home in wedding, it's a small quirky place that flies under the radar, rooms are basic but clean and you're not paying tourist prices

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
