I am an expat and just moved here. I have private insurance and was wondering how much it is (on average) to get my teeth cleaned in Berlin.

I called one place Die Praxie MItte and they said 200 euros for cleaning, which seems expensive but maybe I am missing something.

If there are any cheaper places, open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Mitte is always going to be a premium zone, so 200 for a basic PZR does feel like the "tourist price" for expats. I'd try looking at a Zahnarzt in Prenzlauer Berg or Friedrichshain, but skip the ones right on the main streets like Schönhauser Allee. A smaller practice one or two blocks off those strips usually quotes 100 to 130.

One thing that catches people off guard is the billing structure with private insurance here, they often only reimburse a capped amount, like 60 to 80 euros, so the rest is on you. Ask if the 200 includes the "Ultraschall" and "Pulverstrahl" (air polishing), because those are the two add-ons that drive the price up. Also check if they charge separately for a control appointment, some places sneak that in as a second visit.

If you're flexible on the neighborhood, try calling a practice in Lichtenberg or even Spandau, they tend to be more straightforward with flat rates. I had mine done at a place near Ostkreuz for 95 last year, no fluoride, but it was thorough and took about 40 minutes. Just be clear on the phone that you want the standard cleaning, not the "deluxe" version, and ask for the total price including the exam.

honestly 200 is steep even for mitte. i'd check if it includes the "PZR" plus a follow up, some praxis bundle that in. but if u just want the cleaning itself, try the uni dental clinics, charite has one near campus mitte, students do it under supervision and it's way cheaper, like 50 to 70.

also worth asking about "GOZ" billing codes, private insurance here loves to underpay the standard stuff, so sometimes a place that quotes 120 ends up costing u the same as 200 once u see the reimbursement. get the exact code list before u book, that'll tell u if they're padding with extras like "Oberflächenanästhesie" u don't need.

for a flat rate without the frills, head to a "Zahnreinigung only" studio, not a full praxis. there's one on kastanienallee that does 90 flat, no exam, just the ultrasonic and polish, and they're fast. call ahead and say "nur die Reinigung, kein Befund" and they'll give u the real number.

200 is on the higher end but not crazy for a big Praxis in Mitte, especially if they do the full polish and fluoride thing. you can find it for 80 to 120 at smaller places, usually if you go to the ones that mainly do Vorsorge or are a bit outside the ring. check out dentists in Neukölln or Wedding, like around Hermannplatz, they often quote closer to 100.

also ask if the price includes local anesthesia and if they use the ultrasound thing, some places try to upsell that. since you're private, the bill is on you anyway, so it's worth calling a few and asking for a Festpreis for "professionelle Zahnreinigung" without extras. i'd avoid the chains like Zahnarzt am Alexanderplatz, they tend to charge like a hotel minibar.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
