Plänterwald or Steglitz?

I really like the nature and Treptower park. Also im pretty quick in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg where i usually see my friends. But now a friend offered me to move in in his Wg in the middle-lower Part of Steglitz. I know nothing about living there. From what i read and saw I think its definitely more urban bc in Plänterwald i alway need to take transport, its just residential here (besides a rly shitty netto). But im also kinda scared that im gonna feel so far away, especially with usually 1h +-traveltime to a lot of places. Would love to hear some of your experiences and what u would do!

Rent would be kinda same

tbh you should think about what kind of student life you actually want. plänterwald is a weird pocket where you get the park but nothing else, and that netto is genuinely depressing. but steglitz is the opposite problem - you get shops and a proper u-bahn but you lose the proximity to your social life. i did a year near s-steglitz and the sbahn delays on the s1 are brutal, like 10 min waits at 11pm on a weekend. the wg might be fun with your friend but the daily reality of schlepping to kreuzberg will make you skip hanging out more than you think. also the rent being the same is kinda wild, plänterwald is usually cheaper so your friend's place must be a good deal

ngl the travel time thing is real but it depends on your tolerance. i lived in steglitz for a bit near s-südende and yeah it took 45 min to get to my friends in neukölln but i got used to reading on the sbahn. the upside is you have actual grocery stores and a real burgeramt like the other reply said, plus the steglitzer stadtpark is decent for a run. but if you're someone who gets annoyed by 1h commutes or needs spontaneity (like "wanna grab a beer in 20 min") then plänterwald wins every time. also the altbau in some parts of steglitz is nice but the main schlossstr area is just a mall vibe which i hated. your call but the wg offer might be worth it just for the social aspect if you like your friend

honestly if you're used to being able to walk to the park and have friends in xberg/fhain, steglitz is gonna feel like a different city. i lived near schlossstr for a year and yeah it's more urban in the sense of having actual shops and u-bahn access but it's also just... far. like culturally far. the vibe is older families and commuters, not students hanging out. getting to warschauer or alex will reliably take you 40-50 mins door to door, not counting sbahn delays which are frequent

the upside is you get real supermarkets and a decent burgeramt and the steglitzer stadtpark is nice but it's not treptower park. also that part of steglitz has some quiet streets with altbau charm but the main drag is just chains and traffic. if your current spot is truly just a netto and nothing else i get the appeal of moving but the travel time will wear you down over time imo

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
