dogs off leash?

I had to leave my dog back home in Canada and can't imagine ever leaving her outside like that. I just wanted to hear from people who do this and their thinking? cause its baffling to me!

google search told me there is a law that says all dogs must be on leash so wondering why apparently a lot of people just ignore it?

honestly its one of those things where the culture is just way different than north america. the leash law exists but its rarely enforced unless someone reports a specific problem or your dog actually gets into a fight. most of the dogs you see tied up outside shops are just waiting while their owner grabs a coffee or something from the späti, its a trust thing that would never fly back home.

i think part of it is that a lot of these dogs grew up in the city and know the routine. like the ones in my area near hermannplatz, they literally just sit there and watch people walk by, theyre not reactive. still makes me nervous when i see it but after a few years here you just get used to it. the real issue is people letting their dogs off in places like tempelhofer feld without any recall, thats where you see problems tbh

it's definitely a cultural shock thing. the leash law is real but basically unenforced unless there's a specific incident. most people i know with off-leash dogs have them under solid voice control and have had them since puppies training in the city. the store thing is wild to me too, but i see it all the time in my neighborhood in neukölln, especially outside bakeries and spätis. honestly, the bigger issue is the number of people who let their dogs run wild in tempelhofer feld or volkspark hasenheide without any recall, that's where problems happen

The leash law exists but enforcement is pretty spotty unless your dog bites someone or causes a problem. Some boroughs have designated free-running areas (Freilaufflächen) where it's actually legal to let them off leash. That said, the dogs you see outside shops are usually well-trained and the owners are just popping in for a quick errand. I've seen people lose their dogs doing that though, so it's not without risk.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
