Hiii to everyone who's taking the time to read this!

So I work full time in IT in Berlin. I've been visiting a lot of art markets and galleries recently and as someone who never had the option to pursue my passion, I would like to ask if and what is the process to start a side hustle in Berlin with a full time job.

In fact side hustle might not even be the right word, I just want to create art and have people enjoy it, the minimal "sale" amount would probably be just to keep me motivated (or else it would die out the same as not receiving likes on Instagram and thinking something is not good enough).

I just want to maybe set up a stall in a flea market or near the museum island or wherever, nothing too fancy. I have a blue card but I Ofcourse I know there will be more paperwork involved.

Any advice on any known processes would be appreciated! Thanks in advance! :)

yeah you can definitely do this. the main thing is getting a Kleingewerbe from the Finanzamt, it's pretty straightforward for a Nebenjob. you just fill out the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung online and tell them your expected annual profit is under 24.500€, they'll give you a Steuernummer in a few weeks

for selling on the street, you'll need a Sondernutzungserlaubnis from the Bezirksamt. Mauerpark flea market on sundays is the easiest entry point, about 25-30€ for a spot if you book ahead. museum island is trickier, they're pretty strict about commercial vendors there

one thing people don't mention often - if you're on a blue card, check with the Ausländerbehörde about how much extra income you're allowed. sometimes there's a limit or you need a note from your employer saying it's fine. better to ask before you start selling

fwiw you could also just start by selling on instagram or etsy before dealing with the street market hassle. less paperwork upfront and you can test if people even want your stuff. also check if your rentner contract allows nebenjobs, some IT companies are weird about that

honestly the mauerpark tip is solid but if you want less competition, check out the flea market at arkonaplatz on sundays. smaller crowd but people actually buy art there, not just vintage clothes. also the raw-gelände markets are worth looking into, they're more alternative and open to weird stuff

for the legal side, one thing nobody tells you is that your hausratversicherung might not cover your art if it gets damaged at a market. pretty niche but worth asking your insurance about, especially if you're selling originals

Best tattoo artist in town?

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

The Berlin tattoo scene is pretty spread out, so it depends on what style you're after. For fine line and minimalist work, I'd look at A Fine Line in Kreuzberg, they're booked out weeks in advance for a reason. If you want bold traditional, check out Die Wilde Ecke in Neukölln, they've been around forever and the artists there are solid. Honestly, your best bet is to scroll through Instagram and find someone whose healed work you like, not just the fresh photos, because that's where the real skill shows.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
