the group thing is real, i think some guys see a group of women as a target to try and get a reaction out of. honestly i feel safer alone at night than with friends in places like alexanderplatz or kotti. the key is knowing which streets to avoid, like avoid the direkt route through görli after midnight. berlin is safe in a "probably nothing will happen" way but the constant low-level harassment is exhausting. trust your gut if a street feels off just cross to the other side
I've lived in Berlin for about six years now and your experience matches what I've heard from friends. The catcalling is definitely more frequent here than in other German cities, especially around places like Hermannplatz or Warschauer Brücke late at night. The group thing makes sense to me actually - groups are more visible and some guys see it as performative or a challenge. I'd say most of the city feels safe during the day and evening if you stick to well-lit streets and U-Bahn stations with people around, but I always keep my keys in my hand walking home from the U8 at night.

i'd say skip the big names and look at studiowest in prenzlauer berg, they do amazing japanese style but the waitlist is like 6 months. if u want something quicker, the artists at bitterlich tattoo in mitte are super underrated, especially for fine line. and honestly, walk past the instagram hype, go to a shop in person and ask to see their portfolio book, that's where the real stuff is.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the tattoo convention at Arena Berlin, usually in early summer. It's a good way to see a bunch of styles in one afternoon and talk to artists face to face without committing to a shop. I found my guy there three years ago, he works out of a tiny studio near Boxhagener Platz and does amazing neo-traditional, but he rarely posts on Instagram so you'd never discover him otherwise. Bring cash if you go, a lot of the booths only take that on the day.
