Hi Folks,

My girlfriend recently got accepted into the MSc in International Health program at Charité, Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and we have a couple of questions that we hope you can help with:

The university has given her two weeks to accept the offer. Does anyone know if she needs to pay a deposit or any fee when accepting the offer?

She's also applying for the Digital Health program at the University of Potsdam. However, we might need to pay the fee for Charité before we get a decision from Potsdam. Given that Potsdam is a public university with no tuition fees, and Charité does have fees, we're unsure what to do. Is it worth the risk to wait for Potsdam, or should we go ahead with Charité? For context, she is an international student from a middle-class background.

Thanks for your advice!

i think the deposit is just the semester contribution (around 300-350 euros) not a tuition thing so it's not a huge risk to lock in charité. potsdam's digital health is more tech focused so it really depends what she wants to do career wise, international health at charité is way more global health policy and ngo stuff

Yeah I'd say go with Charité for now, the deposit is usually just a semester fee around 300-400 euros to lock in the spot, not a huge tuition payment. Potsdam might take weeks to get back and missing the Charité deadline could leave her scrambling, so it's safer to pay the small fee and then decide later if Potsdam works out.

ngl the deposit thing depends on what's in her acceptance letter. some programs at charité ask for a semester fee upfront to secure the spot, others don't. she should check the fine print or email admissions, they're usually pretty clear about it

as for picking charité over potsdam

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
